Inaccurate Reports on BBC dropping F1

Whitmarsh believes the BBC would be 'unwise' not to renew F1

20 June 2011

The dominating story of the weekend which provoked some interest was news that the BBC is planning to axe F1 in order to be able to fund its digital channels, currently the BBC has a 5 year deal which is due to end next season.

Coincidentally it was The Sunday Times who have printed this story and it's no secret that Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation who own the paper are interested in F1 for it's Sky Sports platform, so we ought to take this into consideration before believing everything we read. The BBC's coverage has been welcomed in F1 and has most definitely been a success in introducing wider audiences to watching the Grand Prix races. Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren team principal believes the report to be filled with inaccuracies.

I think it would be very sad, and most unwise if the BBC were to dissapoint so many millions of British sports fan by axing it and thats why I don't believe for a moment that they'd seriously consider doing such a thing

As a huge Formula 1 Fan I think it would be a great shame if BBC were to drop broadcast, their coverage is undoubtedly one of the best I have seen. Not only do they cater towards the die-hard fans but also provide informative and entertaining coverage for beginners who are keen to get into the sport. The BBC setup works well especially the great commentary with humour in all the right places and the lack of adverts. I for one would hate to see F1 move to Sky Sports channel.
