How to Corner in a Go Kart | TeamSport

Go-kart cornering is the difference between a win and a loss. Whether you’re new to go-karting or a regular karter looking to brush up on some essential skills, this guide on how to corner in a go-kart should help you get one step ahead of the competition.

Follow this step-by-step method to learn to corner in go-karting and beat your competitors to pole position:

Position your kart on the outside of the track, staying on the gas.

Brake firmly as you reach the entry point, staying as straight as possible. 

Come off the brake as you start to turn in.

Turn gradually into the corner, keeping control over the wheel.

Aim for the corner apex, but if you can’t get to it, stay as close to the inside edge as possible.

Maintain consistent power throughout the turn, and accelerate as you exit.

Practice, practice, practice! Your approach will have to shift with every unique corner, so honing your technique is the best way to get an edge on your opponents.

But let’s take a step back - why should you approach go-kart cornering like this?

The key to go-kart cornering is simple: If you understand how the corner works, you can figure out the fastest path through it. While factors like how you steer and brake are important, the path you take through the corner is crucial. 


This ties into the bigger idea of understanding the racing line. The “racing line” is essentially the fastest path you can take around a go-karting track, and mastering it is the easiest way to improve your lap times and beat your competitors.


To get through a corner as quickly as possible, you have to know the three parts of a corner: the entry, apex and exit. You want to enter, hit the apex and exit the corner to make the racing line as short as you can.

A corner apex is the middle of the corner, on the inside of the lane. You probably already veer towards the inside of the lane because it provides a shorter path around the track, but this is especially true with corners. Hitting the apex of a corner in just the right way significantly reduces the angle you have to turn to make it through the corner, so far less steering and braking is required. 

When you enter a corner, two factors are important. 

Firstly, make sure you’re on the outer side of the track - approach from the outside of the lane and steer inside the lane, into the apex. You could do this when you’re level with the exact middle of the corner, or turn late if necessary and hit a late apex. 

The sharpness of the corner is a factor here. Take, for example, a right-angle corner – you want to approach this kind of corner from the outside, go through as close to the inside as possible, and exit near the outside again. This massively reduces the angle you have to turn. 

Secondly, aim to build as much momentum as possible going into the corner. How you accelerate and brake at this point will affect the success of your go-kart cornering - we will discuss this further in the braking section. 

Your strategy for exiting a corner should mirror the way you entered it. Once you’ve hit the corner apex, you need to go from the inside of the lane back to the outside. This helps to reduce how far you need to steer, making the turn far smoother and quicker.

You also want to accelerate out of the corner. Go-kart cornering inevitably slows you down, so recovering quickly and regaining your momentum is important. After you’ve passed the corner apex, straighten the wheel and start picking up speed. 

What many people don’t consider when they learn how to corner in a go-kart is that the corner apex changes depending on the angle, and this also changes how the racing line would look for different types of corners. 

Once you’ve learned how to improve cornering around one specific kind of corner, you can apply what you’ve learned to all of them. Part of what makes go-karting so exciting is how many different kinds of corners there are across different tracks, including:

The severity of the corner, and how much room you have to exit it, affects where the corner apex is. With hairpins, for instance, the apex may be different from the exact middle of the corner - you may spend longer on the outside of the corner and approach the apex not long before you exit.

We recommend you get to know your local track well, and practice your approach to each racing line until go-kart cornering is a breeze.

Other Factors to Consider when Cornering in a Go-Kart

To learn how to take corners in go-karting, you have to consider the other factors that affect your speed and control over the kart.

When it comes to go-kart cornering, the trick with steering is to do as little as possible. 

Changing direction suddenly is the opposite of what you want to do, as turning sharply around corners either slows you down or makes it hard to keep in control of the kart. To maintain control, you need to:

Steer gradually. Start thinking about the corner early, as you’re approaching it, so that you can position yourself in the right place.

Turn the wheel slightly. When you’re speeding around a go-karting track, you don’t need to turn the wheel sharply to make corners. For go-kart cornering, turn the wheel in small increments until you have the angle you want.

Hold the wheel steady. By keeping steady, you keep control of the kart and can execute the corner flawlessly.

Straighten the wheel as you exit. Accelerate out of the corner, and that’s the technique!

With go-kart cornering, braking is just as crucial to maintaining control over a kart as steering is. You don’t want to drift around a corner - strategically braking at the entry point and accelerating at the exit is the best way to corner as quickly and safely as possible.

There are several different types of braking that pro-racers might use - including threshold braking, cadence braking and trail breaking - but for our purposes, threshold braking is the one you need to know. It involves breaking fairly hard as you get close to the corner, slowing you down as quickly as possible so your lap time stays low. Mastering this will take your go-kart cornering to the next level.

Of course, it’s unlikely that you’ll be the only one on the track, and the positioning of your opponents may affect your go-kart cornering technique. Passing on the inside forces your opponent out of the racing line, so getting on the inside ahead of time is a technique that may work for you. Test test test!

How to get into Competitive Go Kart Racing | Teamsport

Indoor karting is a thrilling sport that caters to both casual hobbyists and competitive racers alike. Many professional F1 drivers - such as Lando Norris and Max Verstappen - started their racing careers with competitive go-karting. 

With its easy accessibility and adrenaline-pumping action, it's no wonder that indoor karting has gained immense popularity across the UK. But how do you go from getting into racing, to occasionally racing (and treating it as a casual hobby), all the way to competitive racing? What are the key differences and the associated costs?

Indoor karting is an awesome way to begin your journey into racing. Enthusiasts of all ages can experience the thrill of racing with our go-karts and e-karting (anyone under 8 years old must spectate only).

Competitive karting requires a greater degree of commitment and focus, with racers dedicating significant time and resources to training, preparation, and participation in races and events.

Transitioning from Hobbyist to Competitive Go-Kart

Transitioning from a hobbyist to a competitive go-kart racer involves a strategic approach and dedication, here are our tips for moving into the competitive world of racing. 

Start by participating in club races to gain experience and sharpen your skills. These events provide opportunities to learn from more seasoned racers and familiarise yourself with the competitive environment. 

Practise regularly and consistently to refine your driving technique. Spend time on the track, both during organised races and in private practice sessions, to hone your abilities and become comfortable handling the kart independently. 

Seek guidance from experienced drivers or coaches who can offer valuable insights and help you improve your performance. We recommend getting a racing coach to help you refine your technique, but speaking with established racers and being a part of the competitive community is also very valuable for growth.

Stay committed to your training regimen and continually strive for improvement to make a successful transition from amateur to competitive go-kart racer.

Be prepared to make sacrifices - making the shift from hobbyist to competitor in any sport requires an incredible amount of dedication - both financially and with your time.

With this being said, the level of dedication will be reflective of how many competitions you wish to do and at what level. Someone wanting to do a single, local race per year, will be spending a significantly less amount of money and time when it comes to training and travelling. This is compared to someone who wants to move into a more ‘professional’ racing role - possibly starting off go-karting before moving into other forms of competitive racing.

The Cost of Karting: Hobbyist vs Competitive 

Go-karting costs can vary significantly depending on the level of involvement and commitment. 

Hobbyist go-karting is an accessible and affordable way for enthusiasts to experience the thrill of racing without breaking the bank. However, competitive karting requires a higher level of financial investment due to the increased focus on performance, equipment, and participation in organised racing events. 


So, how much does go-karting cost for a hobbyist vs a competitor? These are the facts to consider:

Indoor karting facilities usually charge a flat rate or per-session fee for access to the track. This fee covers the use of the track facilities, the go kart itself, safety equipment, and briefing sessions.

Helmets, gloves, and race suits are essential safety gear required for karting. Hobbyists who don't own their gear can usually rent it from the facility for a small fee.

That can create additional expenses such as fuel, accommodation, meals, and transportation of equipment (even if you’re happy to lug it around for the most part!)

Every year on the 22nd of April, the world celebrates Earth Day. A day with the goals of education, community, awareness, and action.

Education: Earth Day aims to educate people on how they can better help their planet; from school learning to midnight googling – the resources and learning opportunities out there are endless and all aim to give you the tools you need to start making positive change.

Community: It takes a village to raise a child, and it will take everyone collectively to save the planet. Earth Day promotes the coming together of a community to take on projects both big and small. Whether you plant a tree with your family or travel the seas to keep them clean. We must all come together as one to heal the planet.

Awareness: Earth Day brings awareness to global issues such as climate change, forest fires, extinctions, non-renewable resource usage and more.  

Action: Earth Day inspires people to take the steps that need to be taken, and not accept that the world cannot be saved. There is no planet B, so take action today.

TeamSport are no strangers to understanding the impact large companies can have on the environment, especially in the Motorsport world.

This is why we are extremely proud to say that we are a carbon-neutral company, with the goal to be net zero by 2030.

Our electrification pipeline (converting petrol kart fleets to electric ones) is accelerating nicely, with currently, 60% (24) of our sites, including Docklands and Gosport, having been electrified.

By the end of 2024, we are planning to be 68% electric (which is 27 sites), with plans to convert another 7 sites in 2025, and 6 sites in 2026. To achieve our target of 100% electrified by the end of 2026.

Teamsport’s dedication to the environment doesn’t end with our electrification project, as in order to call ourselves carbon neutral we have taken part in some awesome programs, from planting over 1,000 trees to abolishing single use plastic and increasing the % of our waste that is recycled. Whilst TeamSport have implemented and are planning a lot to reduce its impact on the planet, it is not just the environment that TeamSport invests in. Everything You Need to Know About the British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC)

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to the British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC)! 

Whether you're a seasoned racer or a complete beginner looking to dip your toes into the thrilling world of karting competitions, we've got you covered with all the essential information about BIKC.

BIKC 2024 registration goes live on 17/03/2024 so if you want to learn more about BIKC and potentially participate, please read on!

The British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC) was born out of a partnership between TeamSport and Motorsport UK, with an aim to create an accessible and affordable grassroots racing event. 

An annual motor racing event perfect for anyone with an interest in karting, from complete beginners to experienced karting professionals everyone is  welcome.

The BIKC is comprised of 5 categories so you’re sure to find the right category for you!

Lightweight - 16+ years and 69.999kg and under

Middleweight - 16+ years and between 70kg - 84.999kg.

And has 4 rounds before a racer is named 2024 BIKC Winner!

If you’re a keen to participate in BIKC, be aware of the following requirements:

To participate you must hold a Motorsport UK K-I Licence which forms part of the BIKC Elite Membership package or Race Academy Membership at a cost of £34.99.

To enter our cadet class, you must be a minimum of 8 years old and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 25”.

To enter our Junior class, you must be a minimum of 12 years old and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 29".

To enter our Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight classes, you must be over 16 and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 29".

All drivers under 16 must also hold a Race Academy Advanced License.

There are three weight classes for drivers aged 16+: 

Lightweight - driver weighs under 69.999kg 

Middleweight - driver weights over 70kg but under 84.999kg 

Heavyweight - drivers weighing no less than 85kg.

Our recommended maximum weight for racing is no more than 18 stone (114kg).

A minimum 25" inner leg measurement is required for Cadet class and a minimum 29" inner leg for Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight classes.

Due to comfort and safety, we recommend a maximum height of 6’4” for racers.

Go karting in general is a physically demanding activity, with BIKC being particularly intense. We do not recommend go karting if you: 

Anyone under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicating substances will not be allowed to participate in any races and will be disqualified.

When you “sign up” for BIKC, select your “qualifying track” from the drop-down menu on the registration page.

After you sign up, visit your “qualifying track” at least 3 times. You will need to set 3 lap times between June 1st 2024 and August 31st 2024. (You can set as many as you like though to get your fastest time possible!)

All your lap times are stored on your Elite Membership profile. You don’t need to save or send any information, it will happen automatically.

Once the qualifying round closes on 31st August, we will automatically take the average from your 3 quickest lap times across all your visits and this will be your “entry” time.

The 24 fastest lap times from each category (20 from Cadets) at each qualifying track will then be contacted to compete in the “Local Final”.

HOW MANY PEOPLE QUALIFY AT EACH ROUND OF BIKC

The top 5 cadet drivers and the top 6 drivers from the Junior, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight categories will be contacted to compete in the “Local Final”.

The top 6 drivers from the Junior, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight categories and the top 5 from the Cadet category will progress through to the Regional Finals – with the winner gaining a free space in the next round. 

The top drivers in each category will progress through to the National Finals.

BIKC Prizes are broken down into a 16 and over category as well as a junior and cadet category. 2024 prizes will be announced in due course so keep an eye for an announcement soon. 

16 and over - Win entry into full season of club100 sprint championship 2024 (10 rounds) plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a full season with total karting zero.

16 and over - Win entry into 3 rounds of the club100 experience championship 2024 plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a single race with total karting zero.

16 and over - Win entry into 1 round of the club100 experience championship 2024 plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a single test with total karting zero.

All prizes are subject to availability, are non-exchangeable and cannot be exchanged for a cash prize. For more information and 2024 prize updates, please check our BIKC Prize’s page.

An annual fee of £34.99 is necessary for both an Elite Membership and a Race Academy Advanced License, which are prerequisites for participating in the Championship. 

During the Qualifying stage, pricing is contingent upon the type of session attended to complete laps, such as an Ultimate Race Experience or Member Event, and can fluctuate across venues. 

A minimum of three sessions is mandatory to submit three laps for your average lap time. 

Entry to the local final incurs a fee of £40 per driver, while entry to the regional final is priced at £60 per driver. Finally, participation in the national final will cost £80 per driver.

This means that you will need a minimum of £215 to make it to the National Finals. This does not include transport to the event location, accommodation for anyone travelling to the event, food and drinks or other extras.
