Hamilton and Button take 2nd and 3rd in Valencia Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton Heads to Silverstone as Points Leader

28 June 2010

The sun was shining in a very crowded Valencia yesterday

as the race to determine the Formula 1 Championship mid season leader took pace. With Lewis Hamilton perching on top of the leaderboard, a win here would have propelled him into a much more comfortable lead. The race however never goes according to plan. With Sebastian Vettel qualifying for pole position, the McLaren pair had lots of work to do, and try as they did, Lewis Hamilton qualified in third place while Jenson Button came in seventh. After a shaky start to the race, clipping Vettel in the first corner and racing with a damaged front wing, Hamilton managed to pull off some fast laps but still leaving Vettel in the lead. It wasn’t until Mark Webber’s frightening crash that things started to get shaken up. Formula 1 cars aren’t designed to do backflips but when they do and then continue to crash into a tyre wall you can but only fear for the drivers life. Webber collided with the back of Kovalainen when trying to pass him on the fastest part of the track. Miraculously Webber walked away seemingly unscathed looking almost furious, possibly at the driving of Heikki Kovalainen whose slower car was proving impassable. Ferrari didn’t have a good time in this race either, with both Alonso and Massa pitting at the same time, Massa having to wait for Alonso to finish, forcing both drivers down to 10th and 17th respectively. Many of the racers ran into trouble on their in-lap after the safety car was deployed, apparently overtaking, and as a result suffered a 5 second penalty. These drivers include Button, Barichello, Kubica and De la Rosa along with a few others. The time is ticking away very quickly for the grand prix at Silverstone, will Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button be able to take a win on home turf? I feel it’s going to be one very exciting race.
