Alonso on top as Vettel crashes in Turkey

Vettel caught out in wet first practice session

6 May 2011

With a wet start to Friday's first practice run, Vettel's Turkish Grand Prix weekend has got off to a rocky start as he spun his car into the barriers

at the exit of Turn 8 leaving Alonso to claim the quickest time. The world champion was and running on intermediate tyres at the time the rain began to pour down and his Red Bull slid left back across the track into the crash barrier on the other side of the track demolishing the right hand side of the car along with the front wing. He was left uninjured but the car is going to need some serious work ahead of the competition, I would be surprised if they get him out for the start of the afternoon session. The conditions caused issues throughout causing other drivers to struggle making it harder for them to take risks, however Alonso completed 13 laps and set the fastest time of 1 minute 38.67 seconds which was 1.402 quicker than Nico Rosberg and Schumacher who was positioned third place. McLaren seemed to think there was no advantage in going out as Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button spent the majority of the time inside the garage, both failing to set a time for McLaren. I'm not sure I quite understand the advantage of sitting in the pits especially with these weather conditions, they are missing out on quality track time which is not much use for being able to test developments. Lets hope they know what they're doing!
