Every year on the 22nd of April, the world celebrates Earth Day. A day with the goals of education, community, awareness, and action.

Education: Earth Day aims to educate people on how they can better help their planet; from school learning to midnight googling – the resources and learning opportunities out there are endless and all aim to give you the tools you need to start making positive change.

Community: It takes a village to raise a child, and it will take everyone collectively to save the planet. Earth Day promotes the coming together of a community to take on projects both big and small. Whether you plant a tree with your family or travel the seas to keep them clean. We must all come together as one to heal the planet.

Awareness: Earth Day brings awareness to global issues such as climate change, forest fires, extinctions, non-renewable resource usage and more.  

Action: Earth Day inspires people to take the steps that need to be taken, and not accept that the world cannot be saved. There is no planet B, so take action today.

TeamSport are no strangers to understanding the impact large companies can have on the environment, especially in the Motorsport world.

This is why we are extremely proud to say that we are a carbon-neutral company, with the goal to be net zero by 2030.

Our electrification pipeline (converting petrol kart fleets to electric ones) is accelerating nicely, with currently, 60% (24) of our sites, including Docklands and Gosport, having been electrified.

By the end of 2024, we are planning to be 68% electric (which is 27 sites), with plans to convert another 7 sites in 2025, and 6 sites in 2026. To achieve our target of 100% electrified by the end of 2026.

Teamsport’s dedication to the environment doesn’t end with our electrification project, as in order to call ourselves carbon neutral we have taken part in some awesome programs, from planting over 1,000 trees to abolishing single use plastic and increasing the % of our waste that is recycled. Whilst TeamSport have implemented and are planning a lot to reduce its impact on the planet, it is not just the environment that TeamSport invests in. Take a look at the website to read about how TeamSport contributes to their local communities. Be that the work they do supporting the charity Mission Motorsport to supporting children excluded from mainstream schooling (Fast Forward) to teaching inmates valuable life skills to assist them in finding future employment.

Everything You Need to Know About the British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC)

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to the British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC)! 

Whether you're a seasoned racer or a complete beginner looking to dip your toes into the thrilling world of karting competitions, we've got you covered with all the essential information about BIKC.

BIKC 2024 registration goes live on 17/03/2024 so if you want to learn more about BIKC and potentially participate, please read on!

The British Indoor Karting Championship (BIKC) was born out of a partnership between TeamSport and Motorsport UK, with an aim to create an accessible and affordable grassroots racing event. 

An annual motor racing event perfect for anyone with an interest in karting, from complete beginners to experienced karting professionals everyone is  welcome.

The BIKC is comprised of 5 categories so you’re sure to find the right category for you!

Lightweight - 16+ years and 69.999kg and under

Middleweight - 16+ years and between 70kg - 84.999kg.

And has 4 rounds before a racer is named 2024 BIKC Winner!

If you’re a keen to participate in BIKC, be aware of the following requirements:

To participate you must hold a Motorsport UK K-I Licence which forms part of the BIKC Elite Membership package or Race Academy Membership at a cost of £34.99.

To enter our cadet class, you must be a minimum of 8 years old and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 25”.

To enter our Junior class, you must be a minimum of 12 years old and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 29".

To enter our Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight classes, you must be over 16 and have a minimum inside leg measurement of 29".

All drivers under 16 must also hold a Race Academy Advanced License.

There are three weight classes for drivers aged 16+: 

Lightweight - driver weighs under 69.999kg 

Middleweight - driver weights over 70kg but under 84.999kg 

Heavyweight - drivers weighing no less than 85kg.

Our recommended maximum weight for racing is no more than 18 stone (114kg).

A minimum 25" inner leg measurement is required for Cadet class and a minimum 29" inner leg for Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight classes.

Due to comfort and safety, we recommend a maximum height of 6’4” for racers.

Go karting in general is a physically demanding activity, with BIKC being particularly intense. We do not recommend go karting if you: 

Anyone under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicating substances will not be allowed to participate in any races and will be disqualified.

When you “sign up” for BIKC, select your “qualifying track” from the drop-down menu on the registration page.

After you sign up, visit your “qualifying track” at least 3 times. You will need to set 3 lap times between June 1st 2024 and August 31st 2024. (You can set as many as you like though to get your fastest time possible!)

All your lap times are stored on your Elite Membership profile. You don’t need to save or send any information, it will happen automatically.

Once the qualifying round closes on 31st August, we will automatically take the average from your 3 quickest lap times across all your visits and this will be your “entry” time.

The 24 fastest lap times from each category (20 from Cadets) at each qualifying track will then be contacted to compete in the “Local Final”.

HOW MANY PEOPLE QUALIFY AT EACH ROUND OF BIKC

The top 5 cadet drivers and the top 6 drivers from the Junior, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight categories will be contacted to compete in the “Local Final”.

The top 6 drivers from the Junior, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight categories and the top 5 from the Cadet category will progress through to the Regional Finals – with the winner gaining a free space in the next round. 

The top drivers in each category will progress through to the National Finals.

BIKC Prizes are broken down into a 16 and over category as well as a junior and cadet category. 2024 prizes will be announced in due course so keep an eye for an announcement soon. 

16 and over - Win entry into full season of club100 sprint championship 2024 (10 rounds) plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a full season with total karting zero.

16 and over - Win entry into 3 rounds of the club100 experience championship 2024 plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a single race with total karting zero.

16 and over - Win entry into 1 round of the club100 experience championship 2024 plus a 30 minute test session of your choice.

Cadet and Junior - Win entry into a single test with total karting zero.

All prizes are subject to availability, are non-exchangeable and cannot be exchanged for a cash prize. For more information and 2024 prize updates, please check our BIKC Prize’s page.

An annual fee of £34.99 is necessary for both an Elite Membership and a Race Academy Advanced License, which are prerequisites for participating in the Championship. 

During the Qualifying stage, pricing is contingent upon the type of session attended to complete laps, such as an Ultimate Race Experience or Member Event, and can fluctuate across venues. 

A minimum of three sessions is mandatory to submit three laps for your average lap time. 

Entry to the local final incurs a fee of £40 per driver, while entry to the regional final is priced at £60 per driver. Finally, participation in the national final will cost £80 per driver.

This means that you will need a minimum of £215 to make it to the National Finals. This does not include transport to the event location, accommodation for anyone travelling to the event, food and drinks or other extras.

Top Tips to Keep Kids Active Over School Holidays

The indoor vs outdoor go karting debate is an old one, and here at TeamSport we're throwing our hat into the ring! Read on for the pros and cons of each.

Which is better: outdoor or indoor go-karting? This is a subject of contention among many motorsport fans and a common question among go karting newbies. 

If you’re struggling to decide what type of track is for you, the short answer is that both have their pros and cons! 

Why do people swear by outdoor go-karting?

A lot of avid racers will claim that outdoor go-karting is the only way you can enjoy the sport.

Here are the advantages of outdoor go-karting:

Outdoor karts go faster. It’s true - most outdoor go-karts reach speeds of 70-80mph, with the fastest reaching speeds of up to 150mph! On a breezy outdoor track, this is an incomparably thrilling thing to experience.

The tracks are wider and longer. With larger plots of land to work with, outdoor go-karting tracks are often far more elaborate, with plenty more space for maneuvering and overtaking. 

Pro-racers and semi-professionals feel right at home. If you’re passionate about Formula 1, you’ll already know that semi-professional and professional race events happen at outdoor tracks. If you’re looking to hone your skills and advance, visiting outdoor go-karting tracks will give you the competitive edge you’ll need.

The greater the challenge, the greater the reward. For a number of reasons, outdoor go-karting is trickier to master than indoor go-karting. But that’s what makes it so satisfying to master!

We’re biased, of course, when we say we like indoor go-karting. How could we run approx. 40 indoor go-karting tracks if we didn’t think it’s brilliant? But indoor go-karting is the most accessible way to experience go-karting, both literally and figuratively. 

Here are the advantages of indoor go-karting:

1. Indoor go-karting is always an option, whatever the weather! If it starts to rain, your plans won’t be interrupted at an indoor go-karting track - you can race to your heart’s content, regardless of the forecast. Meanwhile, the most inconvenient thing about outdoor go-karting is the fact you can only race in dry weather. 

2. Indoor go-karting is great for beginners. People who are new to karting may find outdoor tracks intimidating. With the karts a little slower and the environment more controlled, an indoor go-karting venue is perfect for dipping your toes into the world of motorsport for the first time! 

At TeamSport, children as young as 8 years old are welcome. Not only is it safe, but we can provide tailored advice they need to build confidence and take on outdoor tracks with ease later on. 

3. The terrain is always smooth with indoor go-karting. Outdoor go-karting has the potential unfortunate feature of bumpy and uneven tracks. Go-karts are designed without much suspension, so this can be quite tough on the body and make racing much harder. Indoor go-karting venues have perfectly smooth tracks, so you can glide to victory without that added complication.

4. Indoor go-karting venues are more conveniently located. While yes, outdoor go-karting tracks are generally much longer and wider, they are often situated in rural locations, which isn’t helpful for motorsports fans who rely on public transport to get around. Many indoor go-karting venues are located in towns and cities, making them accessible no matter your mode of transport.

5. With e-karting, indoor go-karting is more sustainable. Many relish the “authentic” experience of outdoor go-karting, right down to the roar of the petrol engines. We understand this, but in the interest of sustainability, it’s worth revisiting what we value about go-karting and making a switch to options that produce fewer carbon emissions. Our initiative to introduce e-karting to as many of our locations as possible has produced karts that are more power-efficient without compromising on thrills!

The indoor vs outdoor go-karting debate has persuasive points on both sides. However, it often ignores the most important difference between the two types of karting: they cater to different audiences. 

Indoor go-karting is not only the perfect gateway for complete beginners, but is also a convenient option for casual racers and a fun option for parties and small events. 

Outdoor go-karting makes more sense for the karting connoisseurs, people with more experience who may be aiming to go pro. 

But most importantly, both outdoor go-karting and indoor go-karting are here for us to enjoy!
