The St Edward's Goblins

The St Edward's Goblins

17 May 2013

The Greenpower Education Trust is an initiative to advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology with young people. The Greenpower ‘Formula Goblin’ project is one such example aimed specifically to inspire school students aged 9 to 11.

The Trust, supported by Siemens and Ford, supplies schools with a flat-packed karting kit and a step-by-step manual. Constructing the kart encourages engineering-like thinking and is also an introduction to basic mechanics. The teams will be judged on their driving skills and speed, appearance and whether they have used ‘green’ or recycled resources to decorate the car. The pupils of St Edward’s School, Cheltenham are embracing the challenge. A small group were selected from Years 5 and 6 of the Junior School to join the Senior School students in a club that ran every Wednesday night developing their racing machine!

Their first race of their kart will be in the Junior School Car Category this weekend at the Renishaw Bristol Goblins event and June 30that the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The children have chosen to have a Panther on the car and their uniforms, which embodies the team spirit of speed and endurance! Of the project and her student’s efforts, their teacher Miss Kelland said"The children have thoroughly enjoyed working as a team on this project and it has also been a great opportunity for the Junior and Senior schools to collaborate." From us all at TeamSport we wish them all the best of luck at their opening race this weekend!
