Marcus Ericsson wins first ever GP2 Sprint Race in Valencia

GP2 race saw Ericsson win after teammate Josef Kral crash on lap 3

The Swede sprinted into the lead after passing Michael Herck, who was sitting in pole-position, in the first corner and fought off a determined challenge from Giedo van der Garde over the last two laps.

Ericsson’s team, Super Nova, have had a rough start to the season and the win in Valencia was very welcomed. There is concern, however, after Josef Kral the teammate of Ericsson, was injured after a horrific crash where Kral ran into the back of Rodolfo Gonzalez and took to the sky in a spectacular flip.

The Czech driver is reported to be conscious and complaining of pain in his right arm and back.

The race had to be flagged earlier than schedule due to time limitations because of several laps from the safety car.

Sergio Perez suffered another disastrous race after being the victim of some opening lap damage when he was hit by Alberto Valero. He found himself a lap down and behind the safety car, although he did produce the fastest lap of the race, before he was given a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags.

So what happened in the Feature race?

Well, Pastor Maldonado took the win to increase his GP2 title chances in another strange race to probably make this past weekend one of the most ‘crashy’ for a long time.

A series of accidents occurring in the first four turns eliminated almost half the racers. The race was restarted with just 13 of the 24 cars, although a couple more joined in after pitting for repairs.

Maldonado kept up the pressure on Bianchi until he ran wide, he then continued to build up a lead and secure the win by 8.2s. Bianchi came in second and Sam Bird finished in third making it an ART 2-3.

Perez had no luck in this race either, when he went to leave the pits, Alberto Valero was ahead of him with the rear jack still attached. Luckily it flew off the car on the 4th turn and safely flew to one side damaging only a TV camera.

If you want a much safer racing experience but still the same high octane rush then go Karting at one of Team-Sports 8 amazing tracks that’s sure to leave you wanting more.
